Crypto staking on Bitpanda: how rewards, commission and risks work

Bitpanda staking delegates your proof-of-stake coins through Bitpanda GmbH and distributes rewards every Tuesday in the staked asset. As of , Bitpanda keeps a commission of 20% of the staking APY and there is no lock-in except for ETH. Rewards are variable, not guaranteed and can be outweighed by a fall in the coin price.

Crypto-assets are highly volatile. You could sustain a loss of some or all of your investment, so it is important to invest only what you can afford to lose. Read the risk disclosure

How staking on Bitpanda works

Staking on Bitpanda is delegated staking. You stay in your Bitpanda account, and Bitpanda GmbH passes the amount you choose to validators on the coin's own network. The network sets the rewards, Bitpanda takes its commission, and the rest reaches you once a week. Rewards are variable and not guaranteed.

  1. What happens to your coins

You pick a proof-of-stake asset you already hold and enter an amount in Earn. Bitpanda GmbH delegates that amount to validators, the operators that confirm transactions on the network and are paid by it for doing so. The live page does not say which validators Bitpanda uses or who runs them.

While coins are staked you cannot spend them with the Bitpanda Card. The security page covers how held assets are stored.

  2. Weekly distribution

Each Tuesday Bitpanda distributes the week's rewards in the asset you staked. Your share depends on two things: how much you staked and for how many full days. The rate behind it is the blockchain's current annual yield, which is updated once a week. A coin staked part-way through a week counts only for its full days.

Bitpanda's commission is deducted before the distribution, so the coins you receive are already net of it. Two minimums decide whether a week pays out at all: see Commission and minimums.

  3. Automatic re-staking

Each weekly reward is re-staked automatically: it joins your staked amount and counts towards the next calculation. Your position grows in coins for as long as the network pays, while its value in euros still follows the coin's price. The live page does not say whether re-staking can be switched off.

Reward ranges on the day we checked

Bitpanda shows a range for each asset instead of one rate, because every network's yield moves. The six ranges below were read on the Bitpanda staking page on 6 October 2026. They are a dated snapshot, and none of them is a forecast.

Treat any APY on Bitpanda's pages as a reference figure that can move. The one that counts for you is on the summary screen, shown just before you confirm the transaction in Earn.

How to read a range. A range gives the low and the high end of what a network was paying, on an annual basis, when the page was read. It is not a weekly figure and not a floor: the yield can leave the range in either direction before your next Tuesday.

What a range leaves out. A reward is paid in coins, so its value in euros moves with the coin's price. A range also says nothing about the trade fee you pay to buy the coin or the price at which you later sell it.

Commission and minimums

Staking has one stated charge and two thresholds. The charge is a share of what the network pays, not a share of your coins: in a week without rewards there is nothing to take commission from.

not statedFee to start or stop stakingNo separate fee is stated on the live staking page or in the cost overview.

The same figure appears in the cost overview: see the staking commission in the Bitpanda fee schedule, which also lists what a purchase costs. On the Bitpanda broker the trade fee for most altcoins is 1.49% per transaction, so a coin bought only to be staked starts with that cost to make up.

Lock-ups and unstaking

Bitpanda sets no lock-in. A blockchain protocol can still impose a waiting period of its own.

Unstaking is open at any time. The one exception is a waiting period built into a blockchain's own protocol, known as an unbonding period, and ETH is the asset the live staking page names for it. The page does not state how long the ETH unbonding period lasts, so no number is given here.

Three practical points follow from the rules. Rewards count full days only, so the days on which you stake and unstake may earn nothing. Staked assets cannot be spent with the Bitpanda Card until they are redeemed. And during an unbonding period the coin's price keeps moving while you wait.

You start or stop staking in the app, in the Earn section. Once your coins are released you can hold them, sell them on the broker or trade staked assets after unstaking on Fusion.

Risks of staking

A staking reward is paid in coins. It does not protect the value of the coins that earn it.

Price risk

You can lose money while staking if the coin's price falls by more than the rewards add. The live page lists a drop in the coin's value during staking as a risk of its own. A position can grow in coins every Tuesday and still be worth less in euros than on the day you staked it.

Slashing and technical failures

A network can penalise a validator that breaks protocol rules or goes offline. The penalty, called slashing, removes part of the staked coins. The live page counts slashing and hacks among the ways staked coins can be lost. It does not say who bears such a loss or whether any cover exists.

Changing rewards

Rewards depend on protocol rules that Bitpanda does not control: a network can lower its yield, change how it is calculated or alter its unbonding terms. For that reason Bitpanda makes no promise about the size of a reward, about returns over time or about a reward being paid at all.

Staking through a provider also means relying on that provider. How staked coins would be treated if Bitpanda GmbH became insolvent is not described on the live page. Read the full list before you stake: staking and lending risks in the risk disclosure.

Staking is not the same as Earn on Stablecoins

Bitpanda Earn holds two products that both pay weekly and sit side by side in the app. They work in different ways. With staking, a blockchain pays the reward. With Earn on Stablecoins, you lend tokens to Bitpanda and Bitpanda pays it.

Where staking is available

Whether you can stake a coin depends on where you live and on the coin.

The live staking table gives some assets a limited-availability label and does not list the countries behind it. The Bitpanda app shows the assets you can stake from your country of residence. This page is written for residents of the EU and EEA.

The list of stakeable assets changes, and the app is the current source for it.

You need to hold a coin before you can stake it. Bitcoin runs on proof-of-work, so it cannot be staked on its own network, but a euro purchase works the same way for any coin: the Bitcoin page shows how to buy crypto with euros first.

Staking FAQ

How does Bitpanda staking work?

You choose a proof-of-stake asset and an amount in Earn, and Bitpanda GmbH delegates it to validators on that network. The network pays rewards under its own rules. Bitpanda deducts its commission and distributes the rest every Tuesday in the same asset, for each full day staked. Rewards are re-staked automatically. They are variable and not guaranteed.

What does Bitpanda charge for staking?

Bitpanda charges a commission of 20% of the staking APY, taken off automatically before each Tuesday's distribution. That was the published figure as of . No separate fee to start or stop staking is stated. Because rewards are variable and not guaranteed, the commission in coins changes from week to week.

When are staking rewards paid?

Every Tuesday, in the asset you staked. The amount depends on how much you staked, on the number of full days it was staked and on the blockchain's current annual yield, which is updated once a week. A weekly reward worth less than EUR 0.01 is not paid, and Bitpanda does not promise a payment in any given week.

Can I unstake at any time?

Yes, unless the coin's own protocol makes you wait. Bitpanda sets no lock-in, but a blockchain can impose an unbonding period before staked coins are released. The live page names ETH as that case and does not say how long the wait is. Staked assets cannot be spent with the Bitpanda Card until they are redeemed, and the coin's price can move while you wait.

Is Bitpanda staking safe?

Staking on Bitpanda carries risk, and no outcome is promised. The live page warns that coins can be lost to slashing or hacks and that the asset can fall in value while it is staked. The provider, Bitpanda GmbH, is authorised under MiCAR by the Austrian FMA (commercial register number 569240v), but staked coins are not bank deposits and authorisation does not shield you from losses.

Are staking rewards taxed?

That depends on the country where you are tax resident. The rules for staking rewards differ between EU member states, and this page gives no rate, allowance or holding period. Check the guidance of your national tax authority, or ask a tax adviser, before you stake. Keep a record of each weekly reward and of its value on the day you received it.

Regulatory disclosure

Staking on Bitpanda is provided by Bitpanda GmbH, Stella-Klein-Löw Weg 17, 1020 Vienna, Austria (FN 569240 v, Commercial Court Vienna). Bitpanda GmbH is authorised as a crypto-asset service provider under MiCAR by the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA), under commercial register number 569240v. The About page describes Bitpanda GmbH, the company that provides staking, and the licences page gives the regulatory status of each Bitpanda company.

Regulation (EU) 2023/1114 (MiCAR) lists ten crypto-asset services, and staking is not named among them. Whether Bitpanda provides staking as part of an authorised service, and which one, has to be confirmed by counsel. The guide on what a MiCA licence does and does not cover goes through the ten services, and there are more guides in Bitpanda Academy.

Staked assets and staking rewards are not bank deposits. Authorisation under MiCAR does not protect you against a fall in prices. Earn on Stablecoins is a separate product that Bitpanda itself describes as unregulated, and nothing in this paragraph extends to it.
