Crypto-assets are highly volatile. You could sustain a loss of some or all of your investment, so it is important to invest only what you can afford to lose. Read the risk disclosure

How buying Bitcoin on Bitpanda works

Bitpanda is a broker. You buy Bitcoin from Bitpanda at the price it quotes you; you do not trade against another customer in an order book. Four steps take you from sign-up to Bitcoin in your wallet.

  1. Create an account

Sign up on the web, or buy Bitcoin in the Bitpanda app. Accounts and wallets are free of charge, and your contract is with Bitpanda GmbH in Vienna.

  2. Verify your identity

Confirm who you are with one of Bitpanda's verification partners. Which documents are accepted and how long approval takes depend on where you live.

  3. Deposit euros

Pay in by SEPA bank transfer, credit card, PayPal or Apple Pay. The limit for each method is in the table of ways to pay for Bitcoin.

  4. Place your order

Choose Bitcoin, enter an amount from EUR 1.00 and accept the price Bitpanda quotes. The trade fee is 0.99% of the order. The Bitcoin then sits in your Bitpanda wallet until you sell it or withdraw it.

Not included: charges from your bank or payment provider, the network fee when you withdraw Bitcoin, and taxes.

The trade fee is not the whole cost. Bitpanda sets the price it quotes you, and that price can include a spread: the gap between the price at which Bitpanda buys and the price at which it sells. How prices are formed, and every other price, is in the Bitpanda fee schedule and deposit limits.

A EUR 100 order for Bitcoin at 0.99% costs EUR 0.99 in trade fee. Spread, payment-provider charges and taxes are left out.

Bank transfer (SEPA)

To buy Bitcoin with SEPA, send euros from your bank account to your Bitpanda account. It is the method with the highest limit. Bitpanda's Fusion page also lists SEPA Instant among its funding methods.

Cards

To buy Bitcoin with a credit card, use Visa or Mastercard, the two schemes Bitpanda names on its savings-plan page. Your card issuer can add charges of its own.

Online payment services

You can also buy Bitcoin with PayPal or with Apple Pay. The limits page sets one limit for all online payments.

Other services. Some Bitpanda pages name further payment services and others do not. This page lists only the four that the buy page puts first.

Who can buy: countries and identity checks

This page is for residents of the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA).

Bitpanda GmbH provides crypto-asset services in all 30 EEA states. Its entry in the ESMA interim MiCA register, dated 9 April 2025, names the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) as competent authority and all 30 states as host countries. Whether you buy Bitcoin in Austria, in Germany, or in Italy, Spain or France, you deal with the same company.

UK and UAE residents are served by other Bitpanda companies, on other pages. Read more about Bitpanda GmbH and its group companies.

Where your Bitcoin is held

Custody on Bitpanda

After you buy, Bitpanda GmbH holds the Bitcoin for you. Holding crypto-assets for clients is a regulated service under MiCA (custody and administration), and it is listed for Bitpanda GmbH in the ESMA register. According to Bitpanda, crypto-assets are kept in cold storage facilities that are examined by an external auditor.

Article 70 of MiCA requires a provider that holds clients' crypto-assets to make adequate arrangements to safeguard their ownership rights, especially if the provider becomes insolvent. It must also prevent clients' crypto-assets from being used for its own account.

See how Bitpanda stores crypto for the evidence behind each claim.

Withdrawing to your own wallet

You can move your Bitcoin to a wallet you control. Bitpanda lists a withdrawal fee per asset and network and adapts it to network traffic, so no figure is quoted here.

A transfer on the Bitcoin network cannot be reversed. Check the address before you confirm.

Broker order, Fusion or a savings plan

On Fusion you still trade with Bitpanda as your counterparty, not with other users, and you can place limit and stop orders on Bitpanda Fusion. A savings plan can be paid by Visa, Mastercard, PayPal or bank transfer.

All three are broker models: Bitpanda fills the order itself. The Academy guide explains how a crypto broker differs from an exchange.

Risks of buying Bitcoin

The price of Bitcoin can fall sharply and fast. You can lose some or all of the money you put in.

Bitcoin has no fixed value. Its price moves around the clock and can drop by a large share within days or hours. Past performance says nothing about future results.

Crypto-assets are not bank deposits, and the MiCAR authorisation of Bitpanda GmbH does not protect you against a fall in prices. Transfers are final: a payment on the Bitcoin network cannot be reversed.

Profits from selling Bitcoin can be taxable, and the rules differ from country to country. Declaring them where you live is your responsibility.

Only put in money you can afford to lose, and read the full risk disclosure before you place your first order.

Buy Bitcoin FAQ

Six short answers for a first purchase. The main FAQ covers more account and verification questions.

How much does it cost to buy Bitcoin on Bitpanda?

Buying Bitcoin on the Bitpanda broker costs a trade fee of 0.99% per transaction, so a EUR 100 order costs EUR 0.99 in fee. Accounts, wallets and storing your coins are free of charge. The quoted price can also include a spread, and your bank or payment provider may charge for the deposit.

What is the minimum amount of Bitcoin I can buy?

The minimum order is EUR 1.00, for buying and for selling. You do not need to buy a whole Bitcoin: you enter a euro amount and receive the matching fraction of a coin. For orders in other currencies the minimum differs, for example GBP 1.00 or CHF 1.50.

Can I buy Bitcoin with PayPal or a credit card?

Yes. You can pay for Bitcoin with PayPal, a credit card or Apple Pay, as well as by bank transfer. A verified account can deposit up to EUR 20,000 a day by credit card and up to EUR 10,000 a day through online payment services, with a monthly limit of EUR 300,000 for each.

How long does a SEPA deposit take?

It depends on your bank and on the type of transfer, and Bitpanda's pages give no processing time for a standard SEPA deposit. What is known: the Fusion page lists SEPA Instant among its funding methods. Until a measured time is published here, do not count on a standard transfer arriving the same day.

Is Bitpanda regulated in my country?

Bitpanda GmbH holds one authorisation that covers the whole EEA. It is authorised as a crypto-asset service provider under MiCAR by the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA), under commercial register number 569240v, and the ESMA register lists all 30 EEA states as host countries. See the MiCAR authorisation and register entry.

Can I move my Bitcoin to my own wallet?

Yes. You can withdraw Bitcoin from Bitpanda to a wallet you control. Bitpanda lists a withdrawal fee per asset and network and adapts it to network traffic, so the amount changes. A transfer cannot be undone, so check the address before you confirm. Until you withdraw, Bitpanda GmbH holds the coins for you.

Bitpanda GmbH is authorised as a crypto-asset service provider under Regulation (EU) 2023/1114 (MiCAR) by the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA), under commercial register number 569240v.
